A Brief History
The Ford Motor Company, one of the largest and most famous names in the motoring world, was created by the legendary Henry Ford way back in 1903. Thanks to their revolutionary new 'assembly line' process, Michigan based Ford quickly grew into a motoring giant - their famous Model T selling over 19 million units in the USA alone!
The company went public in 1956, about the same time as the first of their legendary muscle cars appeared, the 1955 Thunderbird. The equally classic Mustang followed in 1964. Both have recently inspired a series of modern day replicas known as 'Living Legends', but none more so than the greatest Ford of them all, the GT40.
We have Enzo Ferrari to thank for this sportscar icon. It was his last minute refusal to sell out to Ford that sparked the production of the GT40 and it's famous four Le Mans victories on the trot in the late 1960's. Ford have followed this with many more racing successes, 17 Indy 500's, 176 F1 victories (as an engine supplier) along with a plethora of rally, Trans Am and Nascar wins.
The Ford empire now encompasses names such as Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo and Aston Martin, the performance brands managed through Ford's Premier Automotive Group.
