A Brief History

Legend has it that Ferruccio Lamborghini only started making supercars following a snub by Enzo Ferrari when he tried to make a complaint ! Whatever the reason, just be glad he did, as we have since been treated to 40 years of some of the most stunning supercars of all time.

Lamborghini set up shop in Sant' Agata (just down the road from Ferrari) in 1963 and immediately employed a group of now legendary young designers and engineers - Dallara, Stanzani and Wallace to name a few. There they created the world's first mid-engined supercar, the beautiful Miura, which vied with Ferrari's Daytona as the fastest car of the day.

The company were hit by the early 70's oil crisis which eventually forced the first of many changes of ownership. However, this didn't stop the 1975 debut of what many consider the definitive supercar, the Lamborghini Countach. Several derivatives followed until it's final replacement in 1990 by the 200mph plus Diablo - briefly the world's fastest car.

Dipping sales meant another change of ownership in the late 1990s, this time to Audi. Now as part of the VW group, Lamborghini finally had the resources to build not only stunning looking cars but ones that had quality and reliability to match. The hugely desirable Gallardo and Murcielago are the result, the 211mph LP640 being the fastest Lamborghini to date.
