Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo owned by Mike Webb

Mike was looking for a sportscar with good looks and decent performance around the £10k mark. Sierra Cosworth fitted the bill but he wasn't confident he could find a straight one. MR2 Turbo also looked good but he was put off by the current spate of dodgy imports going around. Supra and Impreza were a bit too expensive but then he found the perfect choice - the Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo.

It's a 1997 model with the 20v engine (worth the extra over the older 16v) finished in Red (definitely the best colour) with Black leather seats, air con and a stacking CD. The turbo engine kicks out 220bhp with 228lbft of torque. But the best part of all was the price, just £9,000 from a dealer (you can now get them from around £5k). He can't think of any other cars about that offer all that for well under £10k.

Mike thinks the  performance is fantastic for the money. 155mph, 0-60 in 6.2sec and 0-100 in just 14.5sec are near supercar levels of acceleration, on a par with much more expensive options like the Focus RS or Impreza Turbo. Mike says that when on boost,  acceleration in 1st, 2nd and 3rd is excellent and torque steer just isn't a problem.

Some people are undecided over the Coupe's design but Mike thinks it looks superb, it really does resemble a mini-Ferrari. He also enthuses about the Coupe's interior. It's deceptively spacious and comfortable but the best bit is the colour coded wrap round dashboard, totally unique! Economy is pretty good (around 28mpg even with a heavy right foot) and insurance isn't too bad either, considering the market (he pays around £550 fully comp with full ncb at Tesco online).

Now for the bad news! Handling is just adequate and brakes are only average at best (although improved with uprated 'Red Dot' discs and pads). Steering has good feel but the Coupe suffers from a ridiculously wide turning circle making quick manouvers impossible in confined spaces. Having said that, the good points far outweigh the bad.

Overall Mike is really happy with the car and would recommend it to anyone. He also suggests that anyone interested in buying a Coupe should take a look at the Fiat Coupe Forum for an excellent source of advice on all aspects of ownership. He intends to keep the Coupe for a while yet then see how the money goes ready for the next step up to a Ferrari F355!!!

His all time top 5 are as follows :-

  1. Lamborghini Countach - because it's the most stunning looking car ever
  2. Ferrari F355 - looks, practicality and performance, the perfect supercar
  3. Ferrari F40 - again a superb looker with unreal performance
  4. Porsche 993 Turbo - brilliant all rounder and better looking than the 996
  5. Koenigsegg CC8 - gorgeous looks with insane performance, but not cheap!
