Jaguar S-Type 4.0 V8 owned by Mike Webb

Mike was suffering from withdrawal symptoms after selling his previous Jag a few years earlier. The time came to put things right, with the purchase of an S-Type.

The car is a 2000 model in Pacific Blue (the best colour, closely followed by Mistral) with cream leather and maple wood trim. It has all the goodies including electric seats, mirrors, sunroof, air con, traction, cruise, parking sensors and a stacking CD.

But what makes this one stand out is the superb 18" Monaco alloys, a £2500 option when new - yes, he did say £2500! The standard alloys are fine but the 18" fill out the wheel arches much better for a more modern look and they really don't effect the ride.

Power is courtesy of a 4 Litre V8 pushing out a respectable 281bhp. This will take the S-Type from 0-60mph in 6.8 sec onto a maximum speed in excess of 150mph. Better still is the mid range acceleration in kickdown, more than a match for many so called  supercars.

You get an awful lot of car for your money with an S-Type. Mike's cost under £9k and that's for a car that retailed for £42,000 (with options) just 5 years ago! Insurance is also better than you'd think. Covered under a classic policy with 5,000 annual mileage limit, the Jag costs just £300 fully comp.

Maintenance isn't cheap though. You're looking at around £300-£350 for a typical 10,000 mile service. Don't ask about fuel costs either! Mike gets around 23mpg, but this can dip into single figures if driven 'enthusiastically' in sport mode.

Quality is superb and interior space is excellent. The S-Type will seat 4 tall adults with ease and 5 at a push. The boot is large, especially with the rear seats folded down, but not very deep. Stereo is good but stacking CD is a must (and better in the boot as it fills the entire glovebox if installed there). Cabin is quiet even at speed but it's a big car so handling is only adequate.

In summary, Mike is amazed at just what you get for well under £10,000. Great looks, more than enough performance and in his opinion the finest quality interior there is.

Having chosen the Jag, he did also consider a BMW 535 or a Merc E-Class but at his budget both would have been far older, with lower spec and neither offered anywhere near the 'class' of the Jag.

His all time top 5 supercars are as follows :-

  1. Lamborghini Countach - because it's the most stunning looking car ever
  2. Ferrari F355 - again a superb looker now available for under £40k
  3. Porsche 993 Turbo S - best looking 911 and the ultimate all round supercar
  4. Lamborghini Gallardo - superfast coupe and now with Audi build quality
  5. Mercedes SL55 AMG - 500bhp coupe plus convertible at the touch of a button
