  De Tomaso Mangusta  (1967 - 1972)

Profile

The beautiful Mangusta was De Tomaso's first true production car, conceived to take advantage of the new mid-engined supercar market created by cars like the GT40 and Lamborghini Miura.

The gorgeous flowing bodywork was styled by Giugiaro, then at Ghia, and featured a unique 'gull-wing' boot. Following in the steps of the AC Cobra, the Mangusta combined this lightweight European body with an American V8 from Ford.

The Mangusta was impractical, and chassis problems caused 'unpredictable' handling but the car was a success and put De Tomaso firmly on the supercar map.
