  BMW M1  (1978 - 1980)

Profile

BMW created the M1, their first and only mid-engined road car, with group 5 racing in mind. Unfortunately this never came to pass, however we did see the M1 feature as a supporting act prior to each grand prix race during the late 70's.

Despite this image loss and the ill-fated involvement of Lamborghini in the production process, the M1 is acknowledged as a superbly efficient and easily driveable road car, comparable in approach to the modern day Honda NSX. The Giugiaro styled glass fibre body made a perfect partner for the solid, reliable German engineering. Just 400 were built, all in left hand drive.
