What many believe to be the world's greatest saloon was born in 1985 when BMW placed the 'motorsport' engine from the M635CSi into the new E28 5 series saloon. 1988 saw the arrival of the next generation M5, the E34. Power was up to 340bhp giving a limit free top speed of almost 170mph.
The latest incarnation, the E39, arrived in 2000 to universal plaudits from the motoring press. The new M5 had a 4.9L V8 turning out 400 bhp giving the M5 supercar humbling levels of acceleration. Although limited to 155mph, the M5 can lay claim to the worlds fastest 5 seater with an unrestricted 186mph. The M5's awesome power is kept in check by sophisticated electronics such as traction control, drive by wire throttle and DSM stability control.
