Profile |
|
The brainchild of McLaren F1 designer Gordon Murray, the Rocket was an unashamed race car for the road - even down to the unique tandem seating arrangement. The Rocket made revolutionary use of a powerful Yamaha bike engine in an ultra lightweight 370kg body. The bike's sequential gearbox was also used which actually provided 10 forward and 5 reverse gears from a second gear lever that allowed the driver to change ratios on the fly.
Expensive composites were required to keep the weight down, pushing the price of the Rocket to a hefty £40K. Although unique at the time, the idea has since caught on with offerings from Caterham and Westfield.
