Vauxhall's 2012 Astra GTC gets the VXR treatment to compete with the like of the Focus ST and Renault's Megane at the top of the hot hatch market.
The turbocharged 4 cylinder engine gives out a respectable 280hp, which you'd think may overwhelm the front wheels, but Vauxhall have added Hyperstrut suspension and a mechanical LSD to reign in torque steer. 0-60mph is a claimed 5.8 seconds (despite the noticeable turbo lag) with a 155mph top speed.
Choose the optional Aero Pack, and the attractive coupe styling is enhanced with a neat rooftop spoiler and huge 20 inch alloys. On the inside, there's plenty of kit, but the infotainment is not touchscreen and the switches a little fiddly to locate. Optional full leather looks fantastic though, and the VXR button for the full beans is a welcome addition.
Good value new at around £27k, used examples can be had from as little as £10k.
