It may not be a fast performer by today's standards but the BMW 2002 was significant in that it was Europe's first turbocharged production car, paving the way for the likes of Porsche to follow.
The 2002's engine was originally developed for motorsport and it was in this environment that the turbo unit was fully tested. Turbo lag was massive by modern standards and no intercooler was fitted, nevertheless the 2002 was a lively performer with 60mph from standstill in just over 7 seconds.
The 2002's prominent 'turbo' badging proved unpopular with the authorities and that attitude coupled with the early 70's fuel crisis spelt the end of production in 1974 - the first and last BMW turbo charged road car.
