The 1973 308 GT4 represented several firsts for Ferrari. It was Maranello's first mid-mounted V8, the first (and last) to be designed by Bertone, and also the first to not display the Ferrari brand - originally being badged as a Dino until 1976.
The 2.9 litre transversely mounted V8 produced around 255bhp, giving the GT4 a near 160mph top speed. The lengthened wheelbase actually improved handling over it's 308 GTB sibling.
The Marcello Gandini designed bodywork was unlike other Ferrari's before or since, in that it featured the popular wedge styling of the era. US models received the cumbersome mandatory rubber bumper extensions.
The interior had seating for 4 (albeit quite cramped for rear seat passengers) but with a strangely upright far forward driving postition.
Production ceased in 1980, with the GT4 replaced by the equally unpopular Mondial. Prices have picked up recently though, with GT4's now fetching well north of £50k.
The 308 was joined by a 2-litre 208 from 1976.
