Volkswagen introduced the 8th generation of their ubiquitous Golf R hatchback in 2020.
Power from the 2-litre turbo is up to a hefty 320hp (or 333hp in the limited '20 Years' edition), meaning the 0-60mph sprint takes just 4.6 seconds. Top speed is a more than adequate 172mph.
Handling, always a Golf R strong point, has perhaps wained a bit over the high standards of previous versions, prioritising comfort over all out fast road progress.
Externally, the Mk8 in evolution rather than revolution, remaining quite bland in design terms compared to some of it's rivals, but that's what many Golf R owners want - inconspicuous. The interior is comfortable, with all the modern tech you'll need.
UK prices start from around £45k, with the '20 Years' special edition coming in at a hefty £60k.
