BMW decided against a hardcore M version of the second gen Z4, deciding instead to launch the 35iS as the fastest iteration of the E89 range.
The 35iS is powered by the potent twin-turbo flat 6 N54 from the 1M, with 340hp and 500 Nm of overboost torque, channeled through a lightning fast 7-speed dual clutch box. 0-60mph was a respectible 4.5sec with a limited 155mph max.
This range topping Z4 came with adaptive suspension as standard with Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes. However handling was more GT than sports car (which was actually the market that BMW were aiming for).
The long sleek bonnet and low stance design meant the Z4 was a gorgeous looking convertible. The electric folding hardtop may have added weight, but meant that the Z4 looked amazing with the top up or down. The (optional) BMW multimedia system featured a widescreen motorised display with (optional) online connectivity. Quality was high, but practicality only so-so, with restricted boot space with the roof down.
At £45k, it rivalled the SLK AMG, 981 Boxster and Audi TTS, with class leading pace but only average handling. However, now a used car bargain at around half the price of a Boxster S.
