For those who believed the 'standard' E46 M3 wasn’t fast enough, BMW created the hardcore track oriented CSL. Stripped of superfluous luxuries such as climate control, electric seats and a stereo, the Nurburgring honed ‘Coupe Sports Lightweight’ became an even more focused drivers car. Handling and response were much sharper thanks to an extra 17bhp and a 110kg weight saving and the adoption of racing dampers and a quick steering ratio. To complete the effect, BMW's SMG sequential gear shift was fitted as standard and a truly inspiring race car roar from the 3.2 litre 360bhp engine was included free of charge!
Around 1,400 CSLs were produced during it’s brief 2 year production span, finding universal approval from the motoring press. The stock M3 had been criticised for gaining too much weight in it’s middle age, the CSL addressed that mid life crisis!
