Profile

The stunning Avus prototype was first shown at the 1992 Tokyo motor show.

This Auto-Union inspired concept was the first Audi to feature all Aluminium bodywork (bare unpainted on the Avus) and a 'W' configuration engine layout - features subsequently carried over to production Audi & VW group models.

Theoretical performance was spectacular, with a 211mph top speed and 0-60mph time of 3 sec. However the Avus was actually a non-runner, as the W12 was just a finely crafted wooden mockup.

It is rumoured that a limited production run was considered, but it never materialised. Although it could certainly be considered the progenitor of Audi's eventual supercar, the R8.

The one and only Avus is now part of Audi's Museum Mobile in Germany.
