Following on from the earlier Avus concept, Audi's 2000 Rosemeyer (named after the German racing driver) and it's bare aluminium bodywork was also inspired by Auto Union and Silver Arrows cars of the 1930's.
The Rosemeyer's 8-litre W16 produced around 630hp, for an estimated top speed of 218mph. A twin-turo derivation of this engine would eventually find its way into the Bugatti Veyron.
The car was a technological masterpiece. A series of cameras relay images from outside the car to the windscreen to give superb all round vision. It even has a fireproof Nomex cabin.
Designed as purely a concept from the beginning, the single Rosemeyer now resides in Audi's Museum Mobile in Germany.
