Launched at Geneva 2003, the new CL65 AMG epitomises Mercedes' current thrust toward ever more powerful machinery with a power output of over 600bhp coupled with an unbelievable 738lb/ft of torque (1000 Nm in new money) which, if not for gearbox restrictions, would have topped 885lbft!
This remarkable figure is thanks to an AMG tuned twin-turbo V12 (now boosted to 1.5 bar). Top speed is limited to 155mph but de-restricted it will hit well over 186mph or even as much as 208mph with special tyres. Transmission is via a 5-speed auto box with Mercedes' own speedshift system for lightning quick manual changes. Handling is remarkable for a car of this weight, mainly thanks to the CL's Active Body Control which stiffens individual suspension depending on load.
The CL65 continued with the facelifted third generation from 2010 until production ceased in 2014.
