Audi's glorious new R8 looks set to be the greatest challenge yet to the class leading Porsche 911. The R8 benefits from a variety of Audi group models. Originally based on the on the Le Mans Quattro prototype, it's chassis comes from Lamborghini's Gallardo, while it's stunning V8 powerplant is courtesy of the equally impressive RS4. In the R8, this 414bhp unit delivers 0-60mph in 4.5sec and an unrestricted 187mph top speed.
The R8 is strictly a two seater but is both spacious and practical, with interior quality exceeding even Audi's usual impeccable standards. Four wheel drive is channelled through Audi's R-Tronic sequential gearbox, as development costs precluded the use of the superior twin clutch DSG system. Ceramic brakes are an option as are the innovative magnetic dampers that adjust the ride on the fly.
The R8 underwent a facelift for model year 2012.
