Born out of the now defunct Group B rally class, the Ferrari 288 Evoluzione instead acted as the development vehicle that bridged the 288GTO to the F40.
Five prototypes were built in the mid 1980s with the assistance of Michelotto, all using the 2.9L twin turbo V8, but with varying levels of boost giving power outputs of up to 650bhp. With only 940kg to move, performance was ballistic, with a claimed 230mph top speed.
Early models featured in-house 'functional' styling, with the later ones receiving Pininfarina's expert touch. Weight was kept down by the use of Kevlar and fibreglass bodywork and a carbon fibre rear wing.
Ferrari have subsequently sold three of the five examples to private collectors, for many millions of dollars.
