Profile |
|
The David Brown Speedback is a bespoke coachbuilt GT combining modern technology with classic style, following along the lines of Eagle's E-Type. Jaguar's XKR provides the chassis and 500bhp V8, to which David Brown attaches bespoke body panels and interior trim. Performance is on a par with the donor XKR, with plenty of torque for effortless acceleration up to the limited 155mph top speed.
Despite the good looks, solid engineering and classic ambience, the Speedback has one problem - the price. At a shade under £600,000 in the UK, it is four times the price of comparable mainstream offerings from Bentley or Mercedes, and offers none of the provenance associated with these famous marques. It's appeal will lie with those (wealthy) individuals who long for a bygone era but with the reassurance of modern reliable motoring.
