The classic 904 GTS was created to comply with homologation regulations, where producing a certain number of road cars would allow Porsche to compete in Group 3 Sportscar racing.
The 904 featured a mid engined layout (rare in a Porsche) with over 180bhp. This drove the lightweight 1400 lbs fibreglass bodied coupe to 60mph in around 6 seconds, on to a top speed of approximately 160mph. Astounding performance for the period.
Around 120 examples were produced during the early 1960s. Depending on provenance, a 904 can fetch over £1 million on the used car market.
