Profile |
|
Renault's 5 Turbo was the homologated street legal version of their successful early 80s rally car. Styled by none other than Bertone's Marcello Gandini, the original Turbo 1 featured distinctive flared wheel arches to give the boxy Renault 5 a sporty look. The mid-mounted (where the rear seats used to be) turbocharged 4 cylinder engine produced just 158bhp. Modest by today's standards, but in a car weighing just 970 Kg, this was enough for a 0-60mph sprint of around 6.5 seconds, which was considered very fast at the time.
The Turbo 1 was followed in 1985 by the more mainstream (but equally rapid) Turbo 2. While similar in concept to the Turbo 1, the Turbo 2 used more standard parts and was therefore more affordable.
Almost 4000 Turbo's were produced and have gained somewhat of a cult following over the years, with some prime Turbo 2 examples fetching over £80k.
