Profile |
|
Following the spectacular Giugiaro concept of 1972, the first Series 1 Esprits entered full production in June 1976.
Despite having only 160bhp from its 2 litre engine, the Esprit was good for 0-60mph in around 7 seconds, mainly thanks to its lightweight, fibreglass body (the whole car weighed in at under 2000 lbs). If performance was luke warm, then steering and handling were red hot, a trait shared by many Lotus cars over the years.
The 70's 'wedge' styling still looks the part today. Even the dated tartan interior is going through somewhat of a revival.
Although plagued by reliability problems, the Esprit S1 has become a popular modern day classic, with the best examples fetching over £50k.
The Esprit will forever be linked with James Bond in 'The Spy who Loved Me', although the production model failed to mention 'submarine mode' on the options list!
