The new 2018 Mercedes AMG G63 SUV is a totally reworked upgrade to the outgoing model.

Power is courtesy of AMG's ubiquitous 4-litre twin-turbo V8, in this instance with 577bhp on tap - a match for the AMG GTR! Where it doesn't match the GTR is in the performance and handling stakes. Ride is good (for a 2.5 tonne SUV) and steering vastly improved, but to call it a sporting AMG is a step too far.

0-60mph is reached in just 4.3 seconds, while top speed is limited to 220kmh, or you can bravely increase that to 240kmh with the optional AMG driver's pack.

The exterior has been softened and widened for better looks and ergonomics, while the interior offers all the quality and features you'd expect from a 2018 Mercedes.

It may carry the fabled AMG badge, but the £143k asking price looks on the high side, especially when compared with the Bentaygas and Cayennes in this marketplace.
