Although designed primarily as a race car, the 550 Spyder was road legal, as was the case with many sports racers of the era. Racing versions successfully competed in the Mille Miglia and Nuburgring races of the 1950s.
The mid mounted, air cooled 4 cylinder engine output a mere 110hp, but weighed in at just 550kg, and so had a decent 200hp/ton power to weight ratio (for the time). Top speed was a modest 140mph.
The ultra low aluminium body stood under 1 metre high, and was sparsely trimmed, even for a race car.
Just 90 were built in total, the most famous being the 'Little Bastard' liveried 550 in which movie star James Dean was killed in 1955. Auction prices are astronomical, with the most original examples fetching well over £4million!
