Produced to compete in the World Sportscar Champtionship in the late 1950s, the beautiful Maserati A6 GCS (aka A6GCS/53) was both a road car and a race car in one.
The GCS was successful at many events in the mid 1950s, most notably a class win at the 1953 Mille Miglia. Maserati's race bred 2 litre straight six (revving to a heady 7300rpm) gave out around 170hp and weighed in at just 740 kg, giving a comparable power to weight ratio of a modern super sports car.
About 52 were produced in total, mostly Fantuzzi spiders, with a handful of Pininfarina bodied berlinettas. In either format, they are amongst the most beautiful spots cars ever created. Pristine examples now fetch up to £3m at auction.
