Profile |
|
Evolving from the 365 GT4, the Ferrari 400 was the first car from Maranello offered with automatic transmission and the first Italian car fitted with ABS, coming to market in 1976.
The original curburetted 4.8LV12 of the 400 pushed out an impressive 340bhp, making way for the fuel injected 400i in 1979, this time 'only' offering 306bhp. Ferrari had no choice though, as ever tightening emissions laws forced their hand.
The ride was sporting and yet comfortable, thanks to the hydraulic self leveling suspension.
The Pininfarina bodywork featured stylist Fioravanti's distinct dividing line between the upper and lower panels, as seen on the 512BB. The rear featured four of Ferrari's trademark rounded tail-lights.
The 400 was succeeded by the 412 in 1985, remaining in production until the end of the 1980s. Unloved and therefore cheap in the 1990s, values have recently picked up to around the £60k mark.
