Profile |
|
Designed as a rival to the Dodge Charger Daytona NASCAR racer, the homologated Plymouth Superbird road going car was launched in 1970.
Based on the Road Runner, the Superbird was one of the first cars to be shaped in a wind tunnel, complete with trademark nose cone and enormous rear wing. Unfortunately, Plymouth tweaked the optimised design to make it look more acceptable to the buying public, reducing its speed and aero ability in the process.
The most potent engine available was the 7-litre Hemi V8, with a hefty 425hp output. 0-60mph took around 5.5 seconds, spectacular in 1970! Top speed was a base 150mph, or 180mph with tuning!
After initially falling out of favour, classic examples are now fetching well over £100k at auction.
