Based on the Abarth Sport 2000 (SE010), the 1969 Scorpione was the epitome of the wedge design philosophy.
A two litre engine with 220hp may not sound like much, but when it only has to push a featherweight 1500 lbs, the Scorpione was a really rapid car, especially for 1969. Top speed was a claimed 175mph.
The stunning shape was styled by Sapino at Pininfarina, with access via a single wrap around canopy rather than conventional doors. The trend setting glass tailgate offered a great view of the engine, while the enormous superloud exhaust pipe thrusts out from the exposed rear. A row of six pop up headlamps completed the picture.
Despite being 50 years old, the Scorpione is still going strong, having been shown at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in the 2010s, and housed at the Gallery Abarth in Japan, the private museum of current owner Shiro Kosaka.
