The 1997 Elise GT1 was born of Lotus' ill advised venture into the FIA GT1 Championship, where regulations dictated that a road going model of the race car must be built.
The road-going GT1 took the 3.5 litre twin-turbo V8 from the Esprit, boosted to a whopping 542bhp. This provided an impressive 0-60mph sprint of just 3.8sec, with a near 200mph max, but also with a large dose of unreliability.
The GT1's lengthened and widened bodywork was constructed of carbon fibre and kevlar, with an integrated aluminium roll cage. There's no mistaking the GT1 for a standard Elise, thanks to ground hugging skirts, an enormous rear wing and a rather cool looking roof scoop.
The single GT1 produced was retained by Lotus, never having been offered for public sale.
