A Brief History
The origins of Mercedes Benz echo the very origins of the motor car itself. It was during the late 1880's that Gotleib Daimler, Willhelm Maybach and Karl Benz independently created the internal combustion engined automobile.
Daimler and Maybach began trading as DMG soon after, while Benz formed the Benz Cie company. The companies merged in 1926 to form Daimler Benz, producing cars under the Mercedes brand (Mercedes was the daughter of one of their first racing drivers).
Racing was in the blood of Mercedes from the very beginning (they created the very first race car in 1902), their success spanning the decades from the dominant Silver Arrows of the 30's to Formula One championships today. Indeed, the world's most valuable car is a 300SLR raced by Moss in the 1955 Mille Miglia, conservatively estimated at £15 Million!
Innovation has always been key at Mercedes. They were the first to create a diesel engine and first to introduce crumple zones, airbags and traction control on road cars. The flagship S Class always being at the forefront of new technology and regarded by many to be the world's best saloon car.
Mercedes' performance arm AMG, have pushed the boundaries of power outputs from executive road cars. Some now offer outputs of 600bhp or more, unheard of even in supercars just a decade ago. The 210 mph SLR, produced in collaboration with McLaren, tops the pile at almost 630 bhp!
