As a replacement for the much loved 308/328 the 348 received a luke warm reception from some Ferrari enthusiasts.
The first Ferrari with a steel monocoque chassis, the 348 therefore possessed much greater torsional rigidity which, along with an engine sitting 5 inches lower than in the 328, transformed the handling over its predecessors. The 348's controversial (but still stunning) looks and cable operated gearbox were not a hit with traditionalists but that didn't stop it having a 5-year waiting list at launch!
Two versions were initially available, the TS Coupe and TB Targa. The Spider was added in 1993 - the first fully convertible Ferrari for 20 years, featuring a fully electric hood. With all models receiving a 20bhp power hike in the same year.
