2002 saw Porsche enter the popular 4X4 market with the extraordinary 9PA Cayenne Turbo. It may have weighed two tons but with over 440bhp (with an option for 490bhp) and 450 lbft torque the Cayenne could embarrass many a supercar. Stopping this leviathan was no problem either. Porsche's legendary braking systems proving more than up to the job.
Performance wasn't the Cayenne's only asset. Advanced Porsche Stability Management, air suspension and a slick 6-speed tiptronic box gave it true sportscar handling - almost unheard of in this market sector. Industry consensus was 'why bother'? But with the Porsche brand as strong as ever, and the current market trend toward bigger and faster SUVs, sales should be no problem.
The second generation model was launched in 2010, with a (long overdue) facelift.
