The new SLS is Mercedes’ first fully in-house designed Supercar and the first to be constructed entirely of aluminium, replacing the SLR McLaren in the AMG line up.
Current Formula One safety car and prominent Gran Turismo favourite, the SLS is a Mercedes for the modern generation. AMG’s speedshift 7-speed dual clutch transmission (with sports, manual and ’efficient’ modes) transmits the V8’s 563bhp onto the road, passing 100 kmh in 3.6 seconds and 200 kmh in just 12, all the way to an electronically limited 197 mph max. The coupe was followed by a roadster, then the ’E-cell’ electric version and finally a track oriented ‘Black Series’ edition.
Mercedes describe the SLS as the spiritual successor to the classic 300 SL .With it’s trademark gullwing doors it certainly has echoes of that 1950’s classic. And what to do if it rolls? Explosive bolts are automatically fired to detach the doors, of course!
